Hurry Up and Wait

Last night was an interesting night. I waited until Mallory fell asleep and then drove Mom back to the RMH. When I got back to the hospital Mallory was in "soft" restraints. While I was gone, Mallory decided it was time to take the ET tube out. She had taken the tape off one side of her face and had her hand wrapped around the tube ready to pull when her nurse walked in to check on her. She also was pulling at her pacer wires and the dressing on her chest incision. She's just telling the doctors and nurses she is ready to go! :) While I was in the room with her she did not have to have her hand in restraints. They did however, give her a little something to make her sleepy. She slept well the rest of the night.

The hardest part of her being awake and having the ET tube in, is she is communicating with me with her big blue eyes and the small amount of sign language I have taught her. She was signing Please and then pointing to her ET and NG tubes and had big tears running down her cheeks. It broke my heart!

When you are in a specialized unit in the hospital you get to know your neighbors. Most of which are Mom's, not all but most. I have struck up a friendship, or should I say kinship with Janice, better known as Tessa Marie's mom. Tessa is 7 months old and waiting for a new heart. Last night Tessa and Mallory shared a nurse, Kathe. Kathe came into Mallory's room at 10:15 and said "When you get a minute Tessa's mom would like to talk to you". Mal was asleep so I went right next door. Janice was crying when I walked in (and so was Tessa). I asked her what was wrong and all she could do was shake her head for a minute, catch her breath and then told me, "They have a heart for Tessa". Then I started crying. Tessa has been listed for 11 days and was told she would be lucky if she made it waiting for a heart. Tessa was back up to the CICU with her new heart by noon today! She is not out of the woods yet because the heart was out of body for 4 hours, but she made it through surgery and that is the first of many baby steps. I know you will all say a little prayer for Tessa and her family.

Back to the Princess. :) She did very well through her heart cath. Dr. Balzer did the cath and told me her pressures were a bit high but they expected that and he feels these numbers were lower than what they would have been a week ago. There is no blockage and they did get the samples for the biopsy. We wont know what the results are until later today. She was the first case this morning so results should be in by 5pm. As usual they had to give her a large amount of sedatives to get her to sleep, so it is taking her longer to come out of it. Since she is still asleep the ET tube is still in. She is chewing on it as I am writing this. We are still hopeful she will get that tube out today. I'll let you all know resultsas soon as I know something.

Mallory may be a TV star yet. Today was the ribbon cutting ceremony for the CICU. The local news stations were here and they took some pictures of Mallory in her CICU room after she came back from the cath lab. She actually had a hard time getting to her room because there were so many people in the hall from the ceremony. Mom and I got to meet Maxine Chase and Bob Fox, founders of Build a Bear Workshop. Bob even gave us hugs!

Wendy I know you will be a great support to little Tessa's family. Tessa has to be able to carry on the title of Princess. Knowing that Mallory comes from alot of strong female role models, she is bound to be a fighter until she gets her way. I love you all very much.

Keep on fighting Mallory, it has to be tough for mommy to watch, but just that you are fighting tells me how much better you are getting. I know you won't mind but tonight all of us back home will be sharing our prayers with Tessa! I am sure glad Tessa's mom is lucky enough to know your mom!

Being a mom is one thing, but being a "heart" mom is quite another. The things I worry about on a daily basis are: making sure the kids get enough to eat and making sure they brush their teeth. No matter how hard I push, they want to do it themselves or do it "their" way. I can only imagine what all you "heart" moms feel -- all in one day. And that goes for "heart" grandmas and "heart" aunts, too.

Happy Mother's Day has a whole new meaning to a lot of us! (We'd talk more about the guys if it were closer to Father's day : )

Sending prayers and patience to you Wendy and Tessa's Mom, never give up hope -- Mallory is proof of that!

Mallory and Wendy;
Its great to keep up with your progress. Wendy, find out which station videotaped Mal and post it on the blog. Most stations have a website and then some videos can be downloaded and saved on people's home computer. It may air locally but thanks to the web everyone else may be able to view the tape. Keeping Mal in our prayers. Take care.

Wendy and Mal,
Just a little longer and that darn tube can come out. My heart aches for you Wendy as you watch Mal with it. Soon, soon, soon it will be better and you will have her in your arms and be able to talk to each other. Mallory, Mommy loves you very much and only wants the best for you and in wanting that she has to trust the doctors and do what is best for the long run. Hang in there a little longer.
Thanks for sharing about Tessa too!

Ms. Mallory ~ This is Maddie's Mommy again just checking in on YOU ! We are the family from Florida that stayed right in the same apartment where your Family stays at RMH, waiting for a special heart for 7 months . . . and, WE are so very excited to hear about all the tubes coming out and steps you are taking to show Dr. Canter and the Transplant Team that you are ready to let this HEART beat !

Maddie's Daddy has to fly to St. Louis for business on Thursday and Friday, and I asked him to stop by and take a minute to meet your Family. We have one of our very special lung transplant friends back at SLCH for treatment - Kaylee Maze from Kentucky that Craig will come to visit as well at the hospital.

We keep you in our prayers every night ~ knowing that a special little girl like you is just beginning to know what LIFE is all about, feeling good and showing your family how strong you are !

Wendy and Mali,
Thanks again for all the updates.

We will add Tessa, her family and everyone who had a hand in her "new heart' to our prayers.

We also pray for a positive report for Malis Heart Cath.

I do believe that Mali is just telling the Drs. and Nurses that she is soon going to have all the tubes out soon. I'm sure of this, because us girls know what we want!

Take Care,
Love, Hugs and Prayers

Wendy We love the news from Scott It seems very quiet around here without Logan and Maddie. We miss them but Scott brings them around to see us. Hi Grandma Marilyn, how are you doing? Everyone will be waiting for your update. Say Hi to Tessa's family since everyone around here is saying prayers for everyone. You do a great job of keeping everyone informed. Give Mallory a big hug for us. I could just see her give you the please sign. Wendy taught Mall how to do sign language a long time ago. I'ts pretty awesome. Love you all from Grandpa Kenny

Oh, Wendy, it has to be so hard to see that please sign. It would break your heart. It will be so great when Mallory will get that tube out and not have to do any signs just tell you what she wants. Soon she will be running into mom & daddy's arms. I will say a special prayer for Tessa tonight along with the ones for Mallory and her extended family.
Love, Renee

Wendy and Mallory, Oh what great news. There is power in prayer. I printed yesterdays report off for your Dad Wendy. Then forgot to take it to work. He got it last night. Will print this one and take it this morning. He told me what they did yesterday and we both had tears in our eyes. Glad your Mom is there with you. Mal you have a special Mom. Someday I will have to visit with you about her. I am still saying prayers for you all and will throw one in for Tessa and family too. Hang in their. Love to all and hugs to all.

So I found myself thinking....(dangerous, I know).....I have become addicted to praying for Mallory & family, and checking her blog every morning, noon and night! I can imagine this future blog report:

"Mallory had a great day yesterday. Her blood pressure is normal, and she is pooping and peeing all the time! She is excited for her upcoming 43rd birthday. After working all day in the NICU, she came home to her loving husband and children and ate hamburgers, french fries and corn on the cob. Great job Mal!"

I hope she doesn't mind my addiction to her! :)

Wendy, The best support a mom can have is another mom going through the same situation. I know you will be a great help and inspiration to Tessa's mom as they go through this journey.

As always, our prayers continue for all of you--Dawn Dettmer
